Master in Fiction Virtual Production in Unreal

Nid: 26442
Syllabus
Module 1: Industry and fiction projects (15 ECTS)

Fiction and audiovisual narrative (5 ECTS)
It offers a complete overview of current audiovisual trends, exploring the structure of the industry, trends in genres and content, new production technologies, audience’s behaviour, and the creative process from idea to script. We also work on the effective presentation of ideas, the viability of projects and the analysis of success stories to extract positive practices.

Art and cinematography (5 ECTS)
Addresses art direction and photography in film, learning to document from the script to design visual aesthetics, create sets and analyse costumes. The importance of light in visual narrative is also explored, making decisions about lighting, optics, and composition. You will be trained in lighting tools and techniques for key roles in film production.

Project development and production (5 ECTS)
You will explore the mastery of the Unreal Engine and emerging technologies in digital content creation, focusing on the development of practical skills in the creation of virtual sets and the production of cinematics and CGI animation. You will immerse themselves in intensive hands-on labs and learn to apply advanced techniques to real-world projects.

Module 2: Techniques in creating virtual content (15 ECTS)

You will explore the mastery of the Unreal Engine and emerging technologies in digital content creation, focusing on the development of practical skills in the creation of virtual sets and the production of cinematics and CGI animation. You will immerse themselves in intensive hands-on labs and learn to apply advanced techniques to real-world projects.

Unreal Engine for virtual production (5 ECTS)
You will be introduced to the basic capabilities of Unreal Engine, with a special focus on the creation and animation of digital humans. Through practical and theoretical sessions, students will learn to use Unreal Engine's most advanced tools, including Quixel Bridge and Metahumans, to create realistic characters and immersive environments.

Creation of Virtual Sets (5 ECTS)
You will learn how to design, develop, and optimise complex virtual sets using the Unreal Engine. From concept to implementation, photogrammetry techniques, terrain modelling and the creation of complete virtual ecosystems will be explored.

Cinematic and CGI Animation Development (5 ECTS)
It covers the entire process of creating cinematics and CGI animations in Unreal Engine. You will learn to direct animated sequences, from planning to animating characters and elements, using motion capture and procedural animation techniques.

Module 3: Visual effects in studio (ICVFX) (15 ECTS)

Technical Configuration of Virtual Studies (5 ECTS)
You will have a complete overview of the preparation and management of a virtual studio, including the technical setup required for virtual production. You will learn how to configure cameras, tracking systems and ICVFX solutions, and how to integrate technologies such as nDisplay to create immersive environments.

Analysis and Optimisation of Virtual Scenography (5 ECTS)
Focusing on the efficiency and visual quality of virtual sets, you will learn methods for evaluating and optimising virtual environments. Optimisation techniques will be covered to improve performance without compromising visual fidelity, which is essential for high quality virtual production.

Photography and Art Direction in Virtual Studio (5 ECTS)
You will combine photographic direction and art design with virtual production techniques. The creative possibilities of virtual lighting and composition in fictional projects will be explored using advanced Unreal Engine tools.

Module 4: TFM: filming and post-production (15 ECTS)

Post-production (5 ECTS)
Addresses existing changes in post-production processes and new workflows. It examines how visual effects (VFX) teams are integrated from pre-production, working with the art and lighting team to create virtual environments that complement the narrative, and deepens knowledge of all post-production phases, training participants to make decisions about the processes necessary to achieve the desired aesthetic and visual coherence. From editing to compositing and colour grading, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the tools and techniques required to create high quality final images.

Master's Final Project (10 ECTS)
You will integrate and apply all the knowledge and skills you have learnt throughout the programme, including the complete development of a fiction clip in Virtual Production. You will manage all stages of the fiction creation process in virtual production, taking advice from experts, working narratively on an idea, developing the virtual design, planning production and filming in detail, supervising studio production and closely monitoring post-production and editing.
